10 New Songs You Need This Week

No, I wasn't at Coachella this past weekend. Yes, Beyoncé is amazing. Yes, it was my birthday on Saturday. No, I haven't figured out what to say to people who wish me a happy birthday beyond, "Thanks." Yes, my allergies were terrible all weekend but instead of buying any medicine I just wallowed in distress and complained about them.

Now that we're all caught up since the last time we saw one another, here are the 10 best new songs of the last week. For those on Spotify, here's all of them in an easy-to-digest playlist.

Young Thug — “Up” ft. Lil Uzi Vert

Having heard "Up" at least 30 times since Friday, I can assure you it sounds even better with each additional listen, and while I'm still not quite sure what exactly "Kibbles 'n Bits my dog 'cause we German" means, it sounds fantastic. Let this be the proof that Young Thug, Lil Uzi Vert, and Southside is the real collab album we need.

MorMor — “Whatever Comes to Mind”

Things I know about MorMor:

  1. He’s got a cool name.
  2. Heaven’s Only Wishful,” his debut single, released in February, is too good to be his debut single.
  3. “Whatever Comes to Mind,” his second single, released today, might be even better.

Nicki Minaj — “Chun-Li”

Chun-Li, King Kong with her Timbs—Nicki Minaj is back. It remains to be seen whether "Barbie Tingz" or Chun-Li is the one, but it’s nice to have her ditching pop ballads for two very NY-sounding records to talk shit, throw thinly veiled barbs at her competition (whoever that may be) and attempt to regain her rap throne. Plus, this beat knocks.

Knxwledge — “Relapse” ft. Traffic

Enigmatic as he is prolific, Knxwledge is one of the best producers on the planet and also the one most likely to not give a single fuck about whether most of the people on the planet even know who he is. Gladwemet, his fourth project of the year, is mostly comprised of dreamy, snippet-length beats, but the EP is spearheaded by a collab with L.A. rapper and ScHoolboy Q compadre Traffic, who's coarse vocals directly contrast the production's smooth, throwback groove.

Freddie Gibbs, G Perico & Mozzy — “Colors”

Backed by League of Starz production featuring some silky, late-night sax, Gary’s finest links up with two of the West Coast’s rising stars to balance “living that California dream” with the color-coded realities of gang life.

Janelle Monáe — "PYNK" ft. Grimes

The third single from Janelle Monáe's forthcoming Dirty Computer album is an empowering anthem; a celebration of all things queer, sexual, and feminine; a bright and sweet pop record that makes excellent use of space; and an incredibly convincing ad for vagina pants.

Swae Lee — “Guatemala” ft. Slim Jxmmi

It’s hard to be nitpicky about questionable songwriting when I can’t stop dancing/crying.

Gunna — “Sold Out Dates” ft. Lil Baby

Next up from YSL Records and Quality Control, respectively, Gunna and Lil Baby have obvious chemistry and “Sold Out Dates” is yet another guitar-led example.

WizKid — “Highgrade” ft. Ty Dolla $ign

Dropped off without much fanfare amidst a few other leaks and marked simply with “Freestyle,” “Highgrade” is a sultry, addictive treat for summer nights from the Nigerian StarBoy and the always underrated Ty Dolla $ign.

Peewee Longway — "Feelin Myself"

Sometimes we all just need a little self-love.
