Mr. West has left the building. Any remaining shred of decency has left United States politics. I left Instagram after seeing 5,000 moth memes (only for a few minutes).
In times of darkness, we turn to light. Luckily, for all of hip-hop, that light includes the long-awaited release of Tha Carter V, along with other new releases from Kevin Gates, SOB X RBE, Quando Rondo, and more.
So, like we always do at this time, here are the 10 New Songs You Need This Week, complete with a Spotify playlist.
Lil Wayne — “Uproar”
Tha Carter V is here, finally, and it’s got something for everyone. Fans of lyrics miracles will love “Mona Lisa,” fans of 2007 will love “Start This Shit Off Right,” fans of Nicki Minaj singing will love the ruined second half of “Dark Side of the Moon,” and 12-year-olds will love the "Triple Extension” feature on “Don’t Cry.” With so much variety and too many choices on what is, against all odds, a pretty damn good album, it’s tough to single out just one standout, but it’s pure joy to hear Wayne rap over a “Special Delivery” flip, even if it’s for the second time.
Quando Rondo — “Forever” ft. YoungBoy Never Broke Again & Shy Glizzy
Young Lan lays down the motivational foundation for the highlight from Quando Rondo’s new Life After Fame tape. Flanked by the controversial NBA YoungBoy and an impassioned Shy Glizzy, the Savannah native balances life with one foot in the streets and the other in burgeoning rap stardom.
SOB X RBE — “Uber wit a Dub"
I still have no idea if SOB X RBE is breaking up, but let's hope not. GANGIN II lives up to any and all expectations set by its acclaimed predecessor from seven months ago. Despite the absence of Slimmy B, "Uber wit a Dub," with its slick Cali bounce, is everything to like about the Vallejo group.
T.I. — “The Weekend” ft. Young Thug
T.I. has always brought out the best in Young Thug, and this Swizz Beatz-produced single to The Dime Trap continues that pattern. “Pussy n**** play I bop-brrrat-bop-bop their beard / Your mama seen you get bop-brrrat-bop-bopped, then she teared.”
Kevin Gates — “Money Long"
Perhaps overshadowed a bit by a week of high-profile releases, Kevin Gates returned Friday with Luca Brasi 3, his first full-length project since his release from prison earlier this year. "Money Long" encapsulates the embattled New Orleans rapper's perfected blend of winding flows, melodic hooks, and raps about cellphones and his dick.
Tokyo Jetz — “A Minute”
Currently on tour with Kevin Gates, Jacksonville native Tokyo Jetz pens a no-holds-barred letter to her hometown over a luscious sample of Tevin Campbell’s “Can We Talk?” for her new project Bonafide.
The Alchemist — "94' Ghost Shit" ft. Conway & Westside Gunn
Need a full album of Hall N' Nash over Alchemist beats.
Desto Dubb — “Bankteller” ft. 03 Greedo, Lil Pump, Lil Uzi Vert & Smokepurpp
The five horsemen of the "real hip-hop fan" apocalypse come together for an incredibly enjoyable posse cut. Free Greedo.
Chester Watson — "40 Acres"
With his forthcoming Project 0 dropping October 5, 21-year-old Miami-based Chester Watson delivers the gorgeously low-key "40 Acres." Give this man some goddamn countryside property.
Juicy J — “Neighbor” ft. Travis Scott
I've made way too many jokes about Juicy J making the same song hundreds of times over the last four-plus years, but it’s a little disappointing that Juicy J doesn’t once ask “Who da neighbors?” in a Juicy J song called “Neighbor.” He does say “Fuck Xanax,” though. Progress. Buddah Bless deserves more acclaim.
