Fresh off a slew of performances in Austin for SXSW, Mick Jenkins stopped by Sway In The Morningfor an interview and performance.
During their conversation Jenkins was asked by Sway about fellow Southside emcees Chance the Rapper and in particular Vic Mensa, who has seen his stock rise thanks to a great look from Kanye.
"I look to them for advice," said Jenkins. "I look to them as competition." The DJBooth Top Prospect also added, "Chicago has more of a communal vibe, as far as seeing other artists out and recording, being in the same spaces."
Although in the past competition was often viewed through a beef-riddled, negative lens, in the current hip-hop landscape it seems to be moving more towards a friendly reminder that you always have to bring your best (perhaphs a the legacy of Kendrick's "Control" verse?). And with a new emcee emerging from Chicago seemingly every week, nothing less than you best is even remotely good enough.
