I'm going to keep it absolutely 100% with y'all. When the good folks at Pepsi first approached me about putting together a playlist for spring break, I hesitated. When I think about spring break I think about music designed to be barely listened to, music so shallow you couldn't even dip your toe into it.
But the more I thought about it, the more I began to view it as a dope challenge. If I had to design some music for the hordes of high school and college kids hitting spring break, could I do it? Could I play some songs everyone loves and connect with while also slipping in some gems? Anyone can make a hip-hop head playlist for hip-hop heads, but could I somehow sneak some Leon Bridges into the otherwise usually predictable spring break playlist format? Could I find a way to play some Chance the Rapper? Could I work in a classic joint like Fresh Prince and DJ Jazzy Jeff's "Summertime"?
Turns out yes, yes I can. Frankly I'm pretty happy with the results, I feel like I struck a great balance between the proverbial mainstream and underground, all while keeping that warm and sunny spring break vibe. Check out all ten of my selections at that link below, and hit the comments, let me know what you'd play if you were DJing a spring break party. Happy spring break y'all.
