2K Sports has announced a partnership that will bring together DJ Khaled, DJ Mustard and DJ Premier to curate the soundtrack for the latest installment in their enormously popular basketball franchise, NBA 2K16. The "3 genre-defining" producers, as dubbed by the brand, are promised to deliver a mix of over 50 carefully selected tracks - new and old - in addition to exclusive music in what will be the largest soundtrack of any series entry to date.
Hip-hop and video games have a longstanding history, from the slightly bizarre PaRappa The Rapper to the eternal Def Jam Vendetta to the forgettable 50 Cent: Bulletproof and beyond, and when the two marry well it can be a hip-hop head and gamer's dream come true. Case in point, such classics as Madden 2004 (OutKast, "Pump It Up" and a Madden remix of Bone Crusher's "Never Scared"?!?!?!), Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (coke-fueled '80s-in-Miami heaven) and basically every edition of NBA2K to date. With 2K16 set for release on September 29, and after calling on JAY Z, LeBron and Pharrell to serve as tastemakers for the previous three installments of the greatest basketball video game franchise of all-time, the series looks to make a huge splash with more options and customization than ever.
Though the three curators are obviously rooted in hip-hop, genre selection will also span electronic, pop, rock and alternative, with music from the 1970's to today. This means you'll be able to shift seamlessly from The Ramones' “Blitzkrieg Bop” to Nas’ “Represent” as you outfit your MyCareer player with the optimal combo of sleeves and wristbands. Each producer will be contributing two new and exclusive tracks to the game, though one can assume that Mustard's contributions will sound pretty similar to...pretty much every Mustard beat ever. And in regards to his participation, DJ Khaled had the following to say: "We The Best! Who?!!! NBA 2K16 that's who! WE THE BEST!!!!!!!!"
Jokes aside, I can't wait to hear what Premo and company has cooked up, and I'm looking forward to spending countless hours filling me eye and ear holes with both the game and the game's music. Hit the full press release if you want to check out all the details and what the producers had to say in full.
NBA 2K16 will be available on September 29.
