No, it's not Detox. But still!
According to longtime collaborator Ice Cube, fans should expect a new album from Dr. Dre very soon. Though Dre hasn't released a solo album since 1999's 2001, that wait will reportedly end on August 1. Speaking with Philadelphia radio station Power 99, Cube dropped the following news:
"Dre is dropping an album inspired by the Compton movie. He's dropping something on August 1."
N.W.A brought gangsta rap to the forefront of hip-hop and mainstream culture and launched successful decades-long careers for both Dre and Cube. With Straight Outta Compton, the forthcoming biopic named after their breakthrough debut and based on the seminal group set to debut on August 14, it makes sense that we might hear some new material from one of the group's original artists. When Power 99's DJ Mikey Dredd asked whether or not any new N.W.A music would be present on the film's soundtrack, Cube chose to respond with news of Dre's album, and while it may not be the mythical Detox that we'll be hearing, Cube assures fans that they will be pleasantly surprised.
"It's mega, it's Dr. Dre, it's what everybody's been waiting for ... It's definitely a dope record, and he's dropping it all on the same day."
Ice Cube also spoke on rumors of a possible N.W.A reunion tour, saying "It's definitely, definitely possible." Consider me definitely, definitely interested to see how such a tour will fare considering the length of time between now and the last time the group was on stage as a whole. Ice Cube, DJ Yella and MC Ren reunited for a live performance earlier this year, but Dre was noticeably absent.
