Among all the potential artists a singer could consider covering, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony have to rank pretty high up in regards to level of difficulty.
Granted, "Tha Crossroads" may be one of the group's easier to digest records, but its impressive feat nonetheless, especially when the finished product sounds as good as this recently-released version from singer J Rand.
J Rand, a Florida native and former Interscope signee, hasn't appeared on our pages since he was joined by T-Pain and Flo Rida for a "Ride" nearly two years ago. After a year in 2014 that saw him engaged in a legal battle with Jamie Foxx and 2 Chainz (among others) and not much in the way of new music, J Rand appears to be refocused on building up a buzz and having his voice heard. In this case, in addition to the recent launch of a new SoundCloud account, that means recording a live cover performance of Bone Thugs-N-Harmony's 1996 smash hit "Tha Crossroads" in the NR Garage.
Backed by a live band, Rand effortlessly breezes through his rendition with nary a stumble. Even better? Bone Thugs - who the artist calls his "favorite band as a kid" - showed love by posting a link to the cover on their Facebook, while Layzie gave him a nod on Instagram.
Clearly, J Rand has support from the originators, but what did you think?
[By Brendan Varan. He recently found out that "Tha Crossroads" was the number one song in the country for 8 straight weeks in 1996 and that kind of blew his mind. Follow him on Twitter.]
