The Biggest #1 Hits in Every Decade

From the disco '70s to Drake's current domination, if you want to know an era's culture, look at it's number one hits.

If you want to know what music was truly like in every decade, the top of the charts is a great place to start. For example, if you were to take a look at the biggest number one hits from the '70s you'd see songs like the Bee Gee's "Stayin Alive" and Chic’s “Le Freak” (which was sampled on "Rapper's Delight") as some of the era's biggest. It's true, the '70s really were the age of disco. And if you looked at the 2010s so far, you'd get a heavy dose of Drake and Rihanna, which again, sounds pretty accurate.

Looking back at old number one hits is like reading heiroglyphs, this amazing portal into what a past time's culture valued. So we teamed up with our friends at Pepsi to look at the evolution of the #1 hit, from those disco '70s through the emergence of hip-hop in the early 2000s to today. Decades from now, how will we look back at the number one hits of our time?
