Last Friday rumors were swirling that Drake would drop a track featuring the one two and only Jay Z and Kanye. Last Friday was also April Fools Day, so I was skeptical. A blockbuster track featuring three of the biggest rappers in the game is exactly the kind of thing that would make for a great April Fools joke. Well, here we are four days later and Drake has unleashed “Pop Style” featuring The Throne.
That’s it?! Is this still an April Fools Joke? I was expecting to be writing a Holy Shit You Need to Hear This, but for a song that boasts an all-star lineup, this is D-League at best. There’s so many holes on this track Kanye could use it for his next t-shirt collection.
What happened to all that “Energy” Drake rapped about? Even for someone on Drake's level, getting Jay and Kanye on the same track is a remarkable achievement, and yet he couldn’t sound less excited. Either Drake coasted like a drink on your grandma’s coffee table or he actually thought “Got so many chains they call me Chaining Tatum" is a dope line. Drake must have had an actual ghost write this one because he sounds dead.
yvngxchris Went From Recording on Earbuds to Viral Star
Rapper yvngxchris started off making songs on iPhone earbuds. Now, he's signed and constantly going viral.
But Aubrey isn’t the only problem. The Throne is just as rusty. Jay, who can still contribute a dope guest verse if he's properly motivated, says literally two lines and Kanye’s verse sounds like it was a bunch of unused lines from The Life Of Pablo pieced together using a flavorless piece of Bazooka Joe.
For a song called "Pop Style" this has zero pop. The beat is solid (shout out to co-producer and DJBooth favorite Frank Dukes) but Kanye, Jay and Drizzy have show stopping ability, and yet none of them did anything with this. Three of the biggest names in rap on one track doesn’t happen very often and this is what they brought? I’m still not convinced this isn’t an April Fools joke. I'll stick to "One Dance."
