Andre 3000 Says Outkast & A Tribe Called Quest Had a Joint Album Planned

During a memorial speech for Phife Dawg, 3 Stacks drops some devastating news...

The tributes to Phife Dawg continue to pour in. Following Kanye's powerful speech about how profoundly Tribe influenced his life and music, video has emerged of Andre 3000 similarly recounting how without Tribe there would likely be no Outkast. Andre's original rap name was Jhaz after Tribe's "We Got the Jazz" track, and when they were first rapping for Rico Wade trying to get a record deal, "Scenario" was the song they loved most.

In fact, it turns out that Outkast's love for Tribe was so strong they had attempted to put together a collaborative album.

I'm going to say some disappointing news and some interesting news at the same time. About a year or two ago we were taking about doing a Tribe Called Quest and Outkast album. And for whatever reason it did not happen. I don't want to let the time go by, please people don't let the time go by. And that's one of the biggest things I regret now. We didn't do it, it was on our plate, and we just...let it go.

Andre's entire speech is well worth the listen, he powerfully touches on Phife's legacy and draws a direct line from Tribe to Outkast to Lil Wayne to Young Thug, but it's hard not to focus on what could have been. Not just a Tribe reunion album, not just an Outkast reunion album, but both?!?!?! The man is right, please people don't let the time go by.
