Royce da 5'9" Has a "Few Songs Lying Around" With Eminem, Confirms New PRhyme Album

With Layers fresh in our ears, Royce talks what's next and we can't help but get excited.

For the past week I’ve been getting my face punched in by Royce da 5' 9"s Layers. I’m bruised and bloodied from the beats - shit has me looking like the Doom guy - but I’m still devouring the bars like I’m Augustus Gloop. I’m just now getting a handle on the album and already I can't help but think about what's next. To my surprise, Royce just told me what's next.

In an interview with HHNM, Royce revealed what music he has loaded in the chamber, which naturally included a conversation about Bad Meets Evil. Sorry to disappoint, but aside from a sliver of hope I wouldn't hold your breath for a new Royce and Eminem album.

Fans really want to know if there will ever be another Bad Meets Evil project.

I mean that’s always a possibility. We do have a few songs lying around that we did sometime back. But right now, I’m like super swamped...If at some point me and Marshall end up back in the studio, and we sit next to each other and we got some time on our hands, I can definitely see it happening. I’m always open to that possibility but we haven’t discussed it at all.

Royce also addressed rumors of a collaborative project with Black Thought. Similarly, that project looks like it's still in the first draft stage, but don't dismiss the possibility entirely. Along with heavy praise and a deep respect for the Roots emcee - I can relate, it's probably why we are best friends now - Royce had this to say.

You know what, we’ve been working. We’ve been doing a lot of work together, having a lot of conversations. But hasn’t materialized into anything worth talking about much.

Sarkodie Feels No Pressure

Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie is 10 years into an illustrious career that has seen him rise from underground acclaim to household name.

While both a Bad Meets Evil album and a Black Thought collab would be amazing, neither were the big takeaway from this interview. Instead of holding out hope for two projects that don’t even exist, we should focus on something that does. Something that would be equally as amazing - PRhyme 2. As you may or may not know, PRhyme is one of my favorite albums of the past five years. Following-up an album held in high esteem can be a daunting task, but it's one Premo and Royce are more than equipped to handle.

We’re working on it right now. Actually Preem is going to pull from a new source now. Now the new source he’s going to pull it from will be Antman Wonder. Remember that name, Antman Wonder. That’s basically the concept of PRhyme. Every time we come out, we’re gonna pull from a different source and every time, it will be all one source for the entire album. We’re looking at December for it, hopefully we can have it out for you guys by December.

As a reminder, on the first PRhyme album DJ Premier derived all of his samples from Adrian Younge. As a sample nerd I loved that wrinkle. It’s a unique approach from arguably the best sampler in hip-hop and something I'm excited to see become the signature of PRhyme. It gives the duo a way to both create a signature style but continue to experiment and push their own limits.

Antman Wonder, who produced Layers standout "Hard," utilizes different textures in his music, which should have fans looking forward to the new album.

Layers and PRhyme 2 could serve as bookends to the year Royce re-establishes himself as one of hip-hop's best. I can't wait
