Some "Holy Shit You Need to Hear This" entries slap you in the face with their obviousness. Four seconds into the audio-knife fight that was ScHoolboy Q's "Groovy Tony" and I knew it was going into this series.
Other songs make their holy shit worthiness known more subtly over time though. They're more like a bag of Doritos. You swear you're just going to eat a couple, and then you swear you're only gonna eat half the bag, and then eventually you just admit they're fucking delicious and you're obviously eating the whole thing.
When I first heard (and saw) Wax' "No Real Job" it was obviously good times. He was rapping, really well and really fast, on a boat, while playing the guitar, and singing. I've seen a lot of YouTube rap videos in my day, I'd never seen anything like this. It was entertaining. Are you not entertained?
And then I moved on with the rest of my day....and then I came back to it. And then I watched it again. And then over the course of the last week or so since I first saw it I found myself watching it again and again. Any time I needed a little dose of good times in my day, I found myself pulled back in like I was a meteor circling Jupiter. I bookmarked it. I clicked that bookmark repeatedly.
And then last night I found myself driving in the car and humming, "I don't want to take it no more, bagging at the grocery store" and that's when I realized, holy shit, "No Real Job" isn't just some funny YouTube video, it's straight up one of my favorite new songs. Period.
So if in a couple days you suddenly realize that you're on your 27th listen of "No Real Job" with no end in sight we obviously have something in common, let's be best friends.
Enjoy, and may all your jobs be unreal.
