Without exaggeration Desiigner's experienced one of the biggest explosions in hip-hop history over the last six months. Only 19 artists have ever made their debut appearance on the charts with a song that went number one, as "Panda" did, and most of those artists had stable careers long before their breakthrough. It's unbelievable, really, that an artist who's really only ever released two songs, period, is a hip-hop household name.

A rise that fast means we still don't know much about the life of Desiigner, and Genius' new video interview gives some of the best insight into his story and personality I've seen yet. But among the many gems dropped along the way (he does not in fact own any Versace shit and has still never actually been to Atlanta) was this one about the epic bidding war happening behind the scenes before "Panda" even dropped:

I was in an 11 label bidding war. All of them was going nuts. Some of them gave it to me, some of them was like, 'Ah, let's see how Panda do.' They lost, they lost out. [Now] I'm in a great squad. GOOD Music, Def Jam the family.

I've been around long enough to raise a questioning eye brow at that 11 number, I can't begin to tell you how many rappers told me they were about to sign to some big label when in fact they'd just had a meeting or two, but regardless, it shows that Desiigner's success was far from unexpected. A lot of people had him on their radar as someone to pay attention to, and then he obliterated even the most optimistic predictions for his success.

The raw facts of history say Desiigner will go down as a one-hit wonder, but history's never really seen someone like him before. Maybe we really are witnessing the birth of a new star, and if that's true, there are apparently ten labels that will forever regret not winning that bidding war.
