Kevin Gates has long been one of the most interesting people in hip-hop, but it's often been difficult to understand the diamonds he was dropping in the rough, and not just because of his Southern accent. As he's spoken openly about before, heavy drug use has often clouded his otherwise obviously razor sharp mind, and so it's likely no coincidence that his sobriety has coincided with the most successful period in his music career.
That's right, sobriety. In the midst of a 40-minute long interview with Big Boy that covers an astoundingly vast range of topics, from Gates turning down a deal with Young Money to his commitment to being a father, the Breadwinners Association founder said that he's now completely clean, and it shows. I don't know if I've ever seen or heard Gates this clear and at peace.
Taking Control of Your Intellectual Property with Opposition
We speak with Opposition about the finer details of rights management.
Without exaggeration, if Gates can remain this open, honest and, perhaps most importantly, sober and healthy, I genuinely don't think there's any ceiling on his career. Watching him these past few months has felt like witnessing the true birth of a future hip-hop icon, now all that remains is for Gates to make it happen. And considering both his refusal to get tired and his use of multiple cellular devices, I wouldn't bet against him.
