Like so many great things, as much as I love Run the Jewels, it didn't take long for me to take them for granted. I still remember when "Banana Clipper" first came out three years ago now and my brain started melting out of my ear holes. El-P...and Killer Mike...as a group...and it sounds like this?
Incredibly, the duo not only managed to live up to my sky high expectations, they delivered on and exceeded them. (The same can't be said for Detox, All City Chess Club and that pair of rollerblades I begged my Mom for in 5th grade.) Killer Mike and El-P's careers were revived later in their careers, the music felt like a herd of rampaging elephants rumbling through my headphones, they provided some of the most meaningful moments in hip-hop I've ever seen, won DJBooth awards, and proved you can build a career on free music in 2016. Oh, and they made a cat rap album for the culture. What more could I possibly want?
And yet when we made our "Most Anticipated Albums of 2016" I somehow neglected to include Run the Jewels 3. My most sincere apologies. Thankfully, Mike splashed some cold water on my face and smacked me with an alarm clock today. In an interview with HipHopWired, Mike said that he's about to get in the lab with El-P and turn some rough drafts into finished products and is aiming to get the album out this year.

We talk to the Surf Gang artist about microdosing alternative music in his raps.
“I’d like to be finished by July 7th, I’d like to ball out on the 4th. I think we will be done soon…we want it out this year.” - Killer Mike
Well goddamn then. Usually we should trust these kind of vague album release date hopes about as much as we'd trust Trey Songz to just be friends with our girl, but this is no Jay Electronica situation. So far Run the Jewels has come through on every promise they've made for three years now, so as far as I'm concerned, RTJ 3 is now at the top of my (revised) 2016 Most Anticipated Albums list. Fuck boys be warned and lovers of hip-hop greatness get hyped, the best duo in rap is about to come through and take 2016 to the next level.
