According to DJ Khaled, Nas has finally finished his next album.
Don't believe him? Khaled has released a snippet of a new song called “Nas Album Done,” which will be found on his upcoming Major Key album, and Nas sounds as great as he has in a while.
The album would be Nas’ 11th solo album, and his first since Life Is Good, released in July 2012. The latter was praised as a rap version of Marvin Gaye’s Here, My Dear for the way he spoke about his deteriorated marriage with ex-wife Kelis.
Since then, Nas has celebrated the 20-year anniversary of Illmatic through tours and a documentary; co-founded Mass Appeal Records and helped advance the careers of acts like Run The Jewels and Dave East; and taken on other fashion and tech ventures.
Now, we’ll apparently get more of what we love Nas for the most: music. Buzz about the album has circulated for a while now. Based on previous interviews, we know that Nas has described the album as “the next chapter in myself as a writer,” and that he has been in the studio with the likes of Swizz Beatz, No I.D. (who executive produced Life Is Good), and Timbaland. It will also be his final album under his current deal with Def Jam, as he noted in his verse on the remix to ScHoolboy Q’s “Studio.”
We reached out to Nas' manager, Anthony Saleh, for additional information or comment, but were told that he didn't wish to talk about the album "at the moment."
Let’s hope that Khaled is right. A new Nas album is always welcome, and while Illmatic will always stand as his most impactful album, it's never too late for a master to add another classic to his catalog.
