D.R.A.M. on How Life's Changed: "For The Next Six Months, I Have Two Free Days"

The rising star breaks down the difference between being actually busy and fake grinding on social media.

The same week D.R.A.M.'s hit single "Broccoli"—already No. 1 on the Rap Chart—entered the Top 10 of Billboard's Hot 100 Chart, the Hampton, Virginia-raised artist sat down with Elliott Wilson and Brian "B.Dot" Miler for a Rap Radar podcast.

During the hour-long interview, the three discuss D.R.A.M.'s transition from potential one-hit wonder ("Cha Cha") to legit star-in-the-making and what he's learned thus far in his short career, but the most interesting soundbite came when Wilson asked the Atlantic Records signee how his life has changed the most over the past year.

"For the next six months, I have two free days. Just two."

Miller followed up on D.R.A.M.'s comment by pointing out that the perception that most fans have of the 'rap life' in 2016, thanks to the proliferation of Instagram and our over-sharing culture, is nothing more than "lights, camera, and action." D.R.A.M. quickly set the record straight, however, reminding listeners that perception isn't always reality.

"That is everybody that want it for the look of it. But to want to for the life of it? To need it? To feel like that's all you're here for? If that is really what you feel, you'll do everything in your power to keep the wheels turning."

Basically, there's a large delta that exists between being actually busy and being fake busy, or "grinding." When D.R.A.M. says he has two days off in the next six months, that means he literally only has two days on his calendar that are not currently booked with tour dates, studio sessions, video shoots, media obligations and meetings. D.R.A.M. will surely document some of these experiences on his social media channels, but the point he's trying to make is that in order to ensure music remains a career, and not just a brief pit stop, he knows he must do more than just act the part online.

And he's right. Stacks of cash posted to The Gram might earn D.R.A.M. a thousand new followers, but it won't guarantee him longevity in the music business.

D.R.A.M. is in this for more than the broccoli.
