Nicki Minaj isn’t the most prolific rapper around, but she knows when to strike. After re-establishing her brand over Young M.A’s “OOOUUU” a few months ago, the First Lady of Young Money returns with another song-stealing freestyle — this time over Rae Sremmurd and Gucci Mane’s “Black Beatles,” which just yesterday surged to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 thanks to the #MannequinChallenge viral trend.
In the same way Swae Lee and Slim Jxmmi stake a claim on the legendary English rock band, Nicki Minaj flips another white symbol into black power, dubbing her remix “Black Barbies.” “I’m a fuckin’ black Barbie / Pretty face, perfect body / Pink seats in the ‘Rari / Always fuck ’em like I’m sorry,” she raps.
Don’t think this Barbie doll needs Ken to fight her battles, though. Floating over Mike WiLL Made It’s video game-esque production with shifting accents and flows, Nicki goes on a tear against “all these clown n*ggas actin’” and “bitches who can’t rap for shit.” Beyoncé appointed Nicki the Rap Queen last year, and she has one message for all the traitors plotting treason: “Go against the queen, your career will be elusive.”
From El Chapo and PETA to Fetty Wap and “No Flex Zone” (which Nicki remixed back in 2014), “Black Barbies” is packed heavily with references. But the best are reserved for that rich, old, racist guy who just took office: “Island girl, Donald Trump want me go home / Still pull up with my wrist like a snowcone” and “Half a milli on the Maybach Pullman, boarded / Now I’m praying all my foreigns don’t get deported.”
Remixes are inevitable when a rap song gets hot. Seeing your favorite song being sullied by swarms of struggle rappers can be draining, but anytime Nicki Minaj feels like jacking a popular beat, we're down.
