So many fans of Culdesac are going to be pissed off by this song, and I love it.
I think we’re eventually going to look back on 2016 as the year Donald Glover fully realized his incredible artistic potential. Even that almost seems disingenuous considering everything he’s accomplished thus far, but there’s no doubting this has been an absolute banner year for Glover so far, and his recent musical output is further proving he can do no wrong in 2016.
After all he’s given us this year, we were recently treated with the confirmation of a new Childish Gambino album, ...Awaken, My Love! arriving on December 2, which is just icing on the cake. After hearing the Holy Shit-worthy “Me and Your Mama,” my expectations for ...Awaken, My Love! were high, but after hearing “Redbone”? Shut up and take my money.
Listen, I’m a big fan of all of Gambino’s work, but this is easily the most focused and inspired I’ve heard him in years. I’m totally willing to forego the penchant for amazingly inventive punchlines of old Gambino if this is the kind of shit that’s replacing it.
On “Redbone,” Childish doubles down on the crunchy soul of “Me and Your Mama” and embraces his inner Prince with a pitched-up, sultry delivery backed by a low-tempo soundscape, equal parts Delfonics and Bootsy Collins.
The sounds we’re hearing off this album so far are a far cry from the clever brag-raps that initially introduced us to Donald on a music tip, but that’s what makes him such a captivating artist.
If I were a betting man, I’d put money on this upcoming album being Gambino’s classic.
