On Sunday evening (January 15), Rock posted a text image to his own Instagram, asking his fans, "Who ready for some new Jay Rock?"
Rock released his sophomore album, 90059, in September of 2015, but following a motorcycle accident last February, the Watts native spent most of 2016 recovering from multiple surgeries.
Five months ago, before Isaiah Rashad released The Sun's Tirade, before Lance Skiiiwalker released Introverted Intuition, and before Ab-Soul released, Do What Thou Wilt., TDE head honcho Anthony "Top Dawg" Tiffith posted a video to Instagram of Jay Rock playing back an unreleased track in the studio. The purpose of the snippet was to inform fans that the most senior emcee on his artist roster was back to making music and "80%" done with his next project.
Then, on December 28, after several months without an update, TDE co-president Punch doubled down on Tiffith's previous reveal, tweeting that Rock's album is "almost done."
Knowing that Jay Rock previously waited four years between his debut Follow Me Home and 90059, fans would be wise to temper their expectations for an impending release. However, after SZA's long-delayed CTRL album is finally unveiled in the next month, the next logical artist on the TDE roster to ready and release an album would be Jay Rock. That is, presuming Tiffith doesn't reveal John Doe No. 2 and then call an audible.
Of course, stranger things have happened. Stay tuned.
Update: On Twitter, producer Nascent has revealed to us that he has a record on Jay Rock's new album.
