Major Lazer has another massive hit on their genre-bending hands. We’re calling it now.
Joining forces with PARTYNEXTDOOR and Nicki Minaj, the biggest stars not named Drake of OVO Sound and Young Money, respectively, the trio has finally blessed the world with “Run Up” after weeks of teasing the single on social media.
Considering the star power involved and the uptempo, island-infused sound that has dominated the pop music landscape over the last year, it’s safe to say you will be hearing this song everywhere over the next few months. Also, considering “Run Up”’s ideal listening environment is in the midst of a sexual, tequila-fueled dancefloor, preferably in one of those beachside clubs where the floor is covered in sand, you’re probably going to hear it even more once temperatures pick up and we transition from the misery of winter into the glorious months of summer.
Why release such a perfect warm weather song, and the first real "Song of the Summer" contender of 2017, in the dead of winter? Well, the next six months will give "Run Up" an appropriate runway to fully take flight, especially with a well-timed music video release. For our friends in the Southern Hemisphere—especially in Australia, where Major Lazer is incredibly popular—enjoy the new banger while the sunshine lasts.
The Diplo-led electronic outfit, also including Jillionaire and Walshy Fire, is no stranger to smash hits. “Cold Water,” their 2016 single with Justin Bieber and MØ, peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and currently resides at No. 42, and while 2015’s “Lean On” *only* peaked at No. 4 in the U.S., it was certified 4x Platinum and remains the 10th most played video in YouTube history with over 1.8 billion views to date.
For PND, who despite a dedicated fan base and numerous collaborations with the biggest artist in the world (*cough*Drake*cough) has failed to reach any real chart success, "Run Up" represents his best chance to date to finally break through to a mainstream audience. He scored a No. 1 hit as a songwriter last year with Rihanna's "Work," so his continued foray into a dancehall-inspired sound shouldn't be surprising. (Side note: "Work" was also a chart-topping summer-primed smash released in late January.)
Like "Cold Water," "Run Up" is set to land on Major Lazer's upcoming fourth studio album Music Is the Weapon. While a release date for the album hasn't been set, Diplo and friends should have two huge singles in tow once they do decide to drop.
