Comedian Aziz Ansari recently joined Bill Simmons on The Bill Simmons Podcast to promote season two of his Netflix show Master of None and during their 90-minute conversation, Ansari spoke at length about Kanye and Jay Z and the time he spent with both emcees during the Watch The Throne sessions.
Out of all the stories he shares with Simmons—and there are some doozies, including Jay Z's verse from the shelved "Living So Italian" being repurposed on "FuckWithMeYouKnowIGotIt"—the best one involves a studio session for Kanye's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and a luxury travel suitcase delivery man turning into a focus group, party of one.
"This is so fascinating to me. He was working on 'Twisted Fantasy,' and there was a guy who comes in, he's got two vintage, Hermès suitcases—travel suitcases. And he's trying to pick which suitcase, and he has one of his guys like, 'Yo grab that one and walk around with it a little bit.' [Laughs] 'Alright, grab the other one and walk around with it a little bit.' [Laughs] He wants to see which one looks cooler to walk around with. And he picks one. And the guy is still there, from some delivery service, and [Kanye] is like, 'Hey, I want to play you something. Tell me which of these [songs] you like.'"
Ask anyone in the industry and they'll tell you a personal story about Kanye—even I have a personal story about Kanye—but this Aziz Ansari story might be the most Kanye story ever. Asking one of his guys to model two travel suitcases by walking around the studio to see which one "looks cooler"? So Kanye. Asking the suitcase delivery man for his opinion on some of the greatest records he ever produced? Peak Kanye.
I thought Kanye wanting to add the n-word to every track title on Watch The Throne was my favorite new old Kanye tale. I might have to reorganize my top three.
