Just as Jay Z is, in part, personally responsible for the decline of mainstream lyricism thanks to his longstanding belief in never writing down his lyrics, Lil Wayne is, in part, personally responsible for the gross number of young rappers who have developed a nasty lean-sipping habit over the past decade.
In a new interview with XXL, Chicago drill rapper Chief Keef, who is making the press rounds in advance of the June 9 release of his new R&B mixtape—yes, an R&B mixtape—entitled Thot Breakers, revealed that "around 2012 or 2013," he stopped writing down his lyrics because, at the time, he began to heavily consume prescription-strength cough syrup.
“I started trying to get on my Wayne shit. Wayne inspired that,” said Keef.
According to the 21-year-old, who now makes his home in Southern California, the last mixtape he wrote songs for was 2013's Almighty So. “I just cut beats on, and whichever one I’m feeling, I go right in, waste no time,” he continued.
Keef is far from the only rapper who was inspired or directly affected by Weezy's notorious styrofoam cup addiction. In an interview on the Drink Champs podcast exactly one year ago yesterday, Curren$y revealed that Wayne's obsession with lean almost killed him, literally.
