Over the weekend, several outlets “reported” claims of Childish Gambino effectively stealing the composition, inflections, subject matter, and tone of his poignant single “This Is America” from a track called “American Pharaoh,” by New Jersey-based rapper Jase Harley.

Debates on Twitter, ever ablaze with rational commentary, drove Gambino’s manager Fam Rothstein to reply with a definitive denial. According to Rothstein, the song itself is three years old.

“This song is 3 yrs old, and we have pro tools files to prove it. [sic],” he tweeted.

Rothstein then takes aim at uninvested bloggers latching onto headlines for clicks before doing proper research, and also tagged Pitchfork in a follow-up tweet, confirming that his reply would suffice as a “comment from the label.”
