Everyone wants to know what it takes to be considered the greatest of all time, or, at the very least, to make a lasting impact on their craft. Sitting down with Larry King, 50 Cent broke down what he believes makes Kendrick Lamar—a strong contender for greatest rapper of our generation—such a special act.
“I think that he’s willing to challenge himself,” 50 said wistfully.
Amid the array of cadences and sonic pivots Kendrick employs between and localized to each of his albums, 50’s analysis is right on the money. Yet, another reason Lamar is so special is his humility, as he himself attests he’s yet to make the ultimate connection with words. As his humility informs his hunger, Lamar’s dedication to craft will only make his music stronger.
50 Cent isn’t the only artist to praise Kendrick, either. Pulitzer finalists, Pharrell Williams, Eminem, Kamasi Washington, and more have all come out to exalt the rapper for his seemingly endless skillset.
Does a laundry list of co-signs also make Kendrick Lamar special? Not exactly, but they do affirm the notion that he is currently one of the most impactful artists on the main stage of music.
With so much talent and support within the industry, whatever Kendrick Lamar decides to challenge himself with next, fans will surely be excited about it.
