Trap music king—and self-proclaimed inventorT.I. is days away from releasing his 10th studio album, The Dime Trap. Ahead of the release, and in promotion of his latest single, “The Amazing Mr. Fuck Up,” featuring Victoria Monét, T.I. spoke with Zane Lowe on Apple Music's Beats 1 about the upcoming—and established—artists who continue to inspire him.

Anderson .Paak is, you know, probably one of the most enjoyable listens that you’ll find out there right now,” T.I. said. “Also, Teyana Taylor, Meek Mill, Young Thug… I also like listening to Lil Baby and Gunna. Yella Beezy, he’s pretty dope. Moneybagg Yo is pretty dope. I’d be remiss if I didn't acknowledge the sleeping giants who also raised their head in the past year. Eminem, Lil Wayne with Tha Carter V. It’s been an incredible year in music on all fronts, even artists like H.E.R., 6LACK, The Internet, Daniel Caesar. There’s so many different types of dope shit that’s going on.”

This is a very impressive and expansive list. .Paak is a fantastic selection for numerous reasons, but of course, his understanding of album pacing cannot be understated. Meek Mill is the master of the album opener. Thugger, Gunna, and Lil Baby are all aliens. Meanwhile, Moneybagg Yo is on the forefront of Memphis’ hip-hop scene transformation and ascension.

In the realm of R&B, 6LACK should be commended for finding freedom and beating sophomore slump, while The Internet are soundtracking presentness and Daniel Caesar has cracked the code on true love.

With such a fantastic list of new artists, T.I. is doing exactly what hip-hop needs of its legacy acts: spotlighting the upcoming talent that moves them. Good for T.I., and good for these artists making an impact.
