Someone said Eminem is the king of rap, but that someone was certainly not Gucci Mane.
In a new interview on the Rickey Smiley Morning Show, Gucci was asked if he believed Eminem was the king in hip-hop, to which he replied, still, no.
"You gotta come with a better name," Gucci said. "That ain't worth... I ain't play Eminem in my car. You play Eminem in yours? You sliding around playing Eminem in your car, you and your old lady? ... Dolo play Eminem? Just metaphors?"
Gucci's shock at the cohosts bumping Eminem is nothing new. In 2016, he praised Eminem's uniqueness as an emcee but admitted he does not bump Em in the whip. Over two years later, and Em is still not in Gucci's car rotation.
There's a time and place for everything, and for Gucci Mane's driving time, metaphors and quadruple entendres and a blistering flow just do not do it for him. Maybe something with a bit more bass.
Jokes aside, this must be a very frustrating question for Gucci Mane to receive several times over. As artists, aside from being beloved OGs and generational inspirations, Gucci and Eminem have very little in common. If anything, this moment should be a call to interviewers to do more research and better curate their questions so we are not asking artists the same thing across a span of several years.
Whether or not Eminem's music is ideal for car play becomes tertiary to the point that Gucci Mane, with his story and influence, deserves better questions. Or, maybe, he should start curating and publicizing a car playlist. We'd listen.
