Humble beginnings make for the best stories. That’s why we love to hear that Zaytoven didn’t quit his job after getting his first big producer check, because he was scared of failure.
In a new interview with Maxim, it appears Zay wasn’t the only one starting small. Apparently, Nicki Minaj, Gucci Mane, and more found themselves working their way up from the literal basement.
“[My mother] was just talking about Nicki Minaj, Gucci Mane, and Migos, all these people that used to come to the basement in her house, and now you look up and they’re the biggest stars in the world,” Zay said.
Well, then. There are Dreamville artist camps, and there’s Zaytoven’s mother’s basement, once the home for hip-hop and trap’s biggest stars to date. Now working out of what we can safely assume are more plush studios across the world, it’s humbling to imagine a younger Migos, Nicki, and Gucci all huddled in the basement until the wee hours of the night getting their sessions in with Zay.
Let this story be a lesson to upcoming artists: everyone starts in the basement. There’s no shame in recording in your bedroom because it’s not where you get your start, but where you land once the music hits the streets. In the case of Nicki and company, they landed at the top of the charts. Why not you?
