Frank Ocean Prefers to Create In Company — Here's Why

"It’s a little more risky."

We're always going to be fascinated by Frank Ocean's creative process. As the man who built a staircase and then gave us Blonde, Ocean's process will always be draped in a good deal of lore.

In a new interview with GAYLETTER, Ocean gives us some insight into how he likes to write his music.

"After doing it for a long time, I can kind of work myself up into that place just off the excitement of the song, even if I’m on my own," he said in response to being asked if he prefers collaborators. "Or just really being hyped off saying something I want to say, or a melody idea I want to get off. I can get hyped, but there’s something really special that I always noticed about doing it in front of a peer or, you know, for folks. It’s a little more risky; it’s like, Oh shit, what if I make a fool of myself? I gotta be on point."

Apparently, the pressure to perform makes diamonds out of Frank Ocean's creative output. He describes the "energy of having an audience" as something that keeps him sharp.

If he were to work alone, then, that same rush of adrenaline would not come, since Ocean would know he could just rewrite a line or re-cut a verse.

That risky sensation likely puts the 31-year-old in a more creative mental state, causing him to think faster on his feet and make more daring music. At the least, Blonde was a very daring album.

There is a reason we follow everything Frank Ocean does, and it is because he is so unabashed in every avenue of his process.
