Let’s talk distributor “label services.” Sounds great, but what does it really mean for you and your music? It’s time to paint a full picture and set some realistic expectations.

In addition to digital distribution, a distributor typically provides:

  • Playlist pitching
  • Marketing support
  • Radio promotion
  • Sync licensing
  • Analytics

Sounds good, right? But dig deeper…

Distribution is a given. That is the only part of the agreement they fully control. But for everything else, get specifics. Success rates for playlists? And on which platforms? Extent of marketing? Who controls that budget? Don’t just take their word—ask for examples.

Agreeing to a deal that includes some or all of these services often means taking a longer term and reduced royalty rate. Make sure the math works for YOU. A smaller piece of a bigger pie is only beneficial if the pie actually grows.

What they might not mention but you should ask them about:

  • Level of individual attention
  • How they prioritize artists
  • Specific team working your music
  • Limitations in certain markets/genres or with certain platforms

Is it worth it? Depends on your career stage and needs. A “label services” deal can provide great resources. But you—and your team—should remain the driving force behind your career. Their work should complement your efforts, not replace them.

And finally, do your homework. Ask questions. Talk to other artists. Get feedback. Read the fine print.

You and your music deserve a partner who is transparent and realistic about what they can deliver.
