One of my final posts from the excellent NAMM 2011 show is from a well-known audio maker who is legendary when it comes to production gear and audio quality. Introducing the Mackie TH-12A and TH-15A Powered Loudspeakers in twelve-inch and fifteen-inch woofer configurations; and the Mackie MR5mk2 and MR8mk2 Powered Studio Monitors in five-inch and eight-inch woofer configurations. Having used Mackie speakers and monitors during countless sessions in the studio, I know that these speakers will more than likely live up to the hype and deliver leading-class sound quality and reliability. They are already out now and available for purchase with the TH-15A Thump Loudspeakers coming in at $350 each and the MR8mk2 powered studio Monitor coming in at $250 each. That's actually good prices for top-quality powered speakers. Full Press Releases Below.
Mackie TH-12A and TH-15A Powered Loudspeakers
High-Performance Audio Without the High Price Tag.
Designed by the same team that produced the best-selling Mackie SRM450v2, the Mackie Thump Series Powered Loudspeakers deliver deep low-end and real power in a lightweight design that is extremely portable. Class-D Fast Recovery™ amplification pushes unmatched power to the high-frequency compression driver and bass-pounding high-output woofer. Plus, Mackie Active processing, including a precision crossover and driver time-alignment provides total optimization for maximum system efficiency. Versatile by design, Thump loudspeakers feature a user-adjustable 3-band EQ for tone control and, since they can be pole-mounted or used as a wedge, the Thump Series loudspeakers represent the best value available for a complete stage solution.
More than Just a Powered Speaker Cabinet
Sure, Thump loudspeakers have a built-in power amp—in fact, each have two of them. Our Class-D Fast Recovery™ low-frequency amp drives the woofer more efficiently with less heat byproduct than other speakers. But so much more goes into a Mackie loudspeaker design than just amplifiers. Mackie Active technology (based on the popular SRMv2 Series) divides the frequencies via a precision 2-way crossover and also time aligns the signals so low-frequency and high-frequency signals arrive in sync to every member of your audience. Active compression provides a first line of defense for the drivers and thermal circuitry protects the amplifiers and power supply should things get too hot. All the onboard electronic systems work together dynamically to produce superior quality sound previously unavailable in this price range.
Portability Meets Versatility
For most people, portability is paramount. That’s why Thump loudspeakers are ultra-compact and lightweight, especially the TH-12A which is less than two feet tall and weighs in just over 25lbs. And regardless of application, there’s a right Thump for the job. Both deliver unmatched low end, that’s why they are Thumps. But, if you are a DJ and really need to bump, the TH-15A’s large woofer is the perfect choice. For vocal-only scenarios and applications with acoustic instruments that require superior midrange, the TH-12A shines.
Not only are Thump loudspeakers superb PA enclosures, they also make a superior monitor wedge—just lay the cabinet on its side and turn it up. The compact, lightweight design means zero strain, whether mounting it on a high pole or loading up the van. Ultra-wide frequency response makes them ideal as a keyboard, vocal or even bass guitar monitor. Thump loudspeakers have incredibly smooth response and dispersion over a wide range of frequencies, so you can crank ‘em up and they still sound smooth and never harsh.
Exceptional Sonic Performance
Thump Series powered loudspeakers put out a tremendous amount of sound for their size and price tag. The 2-way ported design generates ample quantities of chest-pounding bass, and their 1" compression driver ensures smooth, wide dispersion. We even inserted a 3-band equalizer at the input to give you all the tonal control you could ever want, with an available 15dB boost or cut at 80Hz (low shelf), 100Hz to 8kHz (sweepable mids) and 12kHz (high shelf). With their extremely versatile EQ, you can add some extra thump to that kick drum, bring out the sizzle in your hi-hats, add pop to vocals or correct acoustic anomalies in the room.
Protecting Your Investment
Because we know you demand the most from your speakers, we added some extra circuitry to keep your Thump loudspeakers performing at their best, even when pushed really hard for long periods of time. Each driver has its own transparent compression circuit, which helps protect them from damaging transient peaks. An over-excursion filter, inserted just before the low frequency amplifier, protects the woofer from bottoming-out when the low-end is driven to the maximum. This means you can hit them hard without fear of thermal damage. We know things can get pretty hot in the real world, so if the electronics do overheat, separate thermal switches activate and shut down the high and/or low frequency amplifiers until they cool down. These safeguards ensure long life and great-sounding loudspeakers you can always count on.
Mackie MR5mk2 and MR8mk2 Powered Monitors
Power. Performance. Clarity.
Look. We know that you know that we know there are tons of affordable studio reference monitors out there, each claiming to “raise the bar” on the other. The MRmk2 value proposition is simple. As a professional studio monitoring solution, MRmk2s are extremely balanced, outputting high-frequency clarity and midrange definition you can stake your reputation on. Furthermore, they out-power any competitively-priced monitor solution and deliver deeper, more accurate bass than anything in their class. Perfect for professional and home studios, as well as home theaters and multimedia applications, MRmk2 monitors deliver a rich sonic experience and the power, performance and clarity you need to create world-class mixes.
ALL-NEW PROFESSIONAL TRANSDUCERS
MRmk2 Series studio monitors feature all-new professional transducers specifically designed to meet the demands of the modern project studio. The neodymium magnet-driven silk dome tweeter is both smooth and accurate, featuring ferro-fluid cooling to help protect against power compression during wide dynamic playback. Meanwhile, the hyperbolic curved cone woofer, inverted dust cap and long voice coil winding work in tandem to deliver smooth, consistent output with controlled low frequency performance. When paired with our precision-tuned amplifiers, MRmk2 monitors provide spot-on input-to-output tuning that you can take to the bank.
PRECISION POWER AMPLIFIERS
The dual precision Class A/B amplifiers have been re-voiced to specifically match their new driver components, ensuring that your sound is minimally impacted by distortion, artifacts or changes in frequency response often imparted by working at a variety of volume levels. MRmk2 Series monitors are a 2-way design that offers up to 150 watts of total system power. Delivering more power than anything in their class, MRmk2 studio monitors provide exceedingly smooth output, from ultra-low bass frequencies to precise midrange and sparkling highs.
CUSTOM WAVEGUIDE & BAFFLE
An optimally-sized custom waveguide is designed to maximize sonic clarity and dispersion, while also serving to minimize diffractions. This approach allows for seamless transition of HF and LF content along with a 3-dimensional sense of space. MRmk2 monitors also feature a molded baffle to impart superior imaging and depth. Your monitors need to be as accurate as they are great-sounding, and the MRmk2 design philosophy gives you exactly that.
TOP-NOTCH CABINET DESIGN
Much more than sleek-looking, MRmk2 cabinets also feature custom-tuned rear ports, allowing for the controlled passage of air in and out. Plus, the cabinet is constructed of solid MDF, so there’s no unwanted distortion from air movement or vibrations. Transducers are never restricted by pressure, and the cabinets resonate low for deep, balanced bass. We know studios can be expensive to set up, which is why everything even down to the cabinet design of MRmk2s is handled with the utmost attention to detail.
