Setup & First Impressions

Pioneer DJ has released a brand new two-channel scratch/battle DJ Mixer that works in perfect harmony with Serato DJ and has all of the Pioneer FX that DJ's have come to love. The new Pioneer DJM-S9 Serato DJ Mixer sports eight RGB backlit pads for each channel, dual USB ports for easy DJ switch-overs, and a new Magvel Pro scratch crossfader that has many unique adjustments and features for today's scratch DJ's. The Pioneer DJ team released a quick teaser video of this mixer a few days ago and there were pictures of the DJM-S9 already leaked online before the official announcement this morning. That didn't take away from my excitement for the final release. The DJM-S9 is like taking the classic DJM-909 mixer and mixing it up with a DDJ-S1 to give you all the Serato DJ goodness one could hope for.

The DJM-S9 is a true battle scratch mixer at heart... The DJM-S9 has a solid and durable construction with all knobs having metal posts that are attached to the metal frame of the mixer. The DJM-S9 comes bundled with the Full Serato DJ software and timecode vinyl so that DJ's can start playing their DVS setup right out of the box. The DJM-S9 sports a clean lower half of the mixer that has the new Magvel Professional crossfader that allows DJ's to easily adjust the tension (via the knob on the front face of the mixer), adjust the curve control, and also allows DJ's to replace the end bumper-stops which gives the fader a different spring and feel/sound. The DJM-S9 also includes the Serato DJ RGB backlit pads for each channel which will control, hot cues, loop, roll, slicer, and the SP6 sampler. There is a small screen on the DJM-S9 that allows users to see which pad mode they are currently in.

The DJM-S9 has dual USB ports for easy DJ switch-overs can it can also be used to control four decks in Serato DJ as you can switch between 1/3 on the left and 2/4 on the right. There are a PLETHORA of effects options as well with the Pioneer Beat FX and Serato DJ FX easily accessible on the face of the mixer using the Blue buttons on the left or right. DJ's can assign either Pioneer Beat FX, or Serato DJ software FX across two large RMX-1000 style levers which can be used to apply FX either momentary or latched quickly in the mix.

Conclusion / Recommended For

In Conclusion, the Pioneer DJM-S9 is now my new favorite 2-channel battle scratch-style DJ mixer. The DJM-S9 has solid and sturdy build quality with all knobs having full metal posts. The DJM-S9 also has the 16 RGB multi-colored backlit jpads that control all the Serato Performance features. The DJM-S9 has 12 on-board and iconic Pioneer DJ effects as well as the Serato DJ efffects which an be triggered with the excellent punch-in style switches. The DJM-S9 also has one of the best crossfaders on the market with the new Magvel Pro V2 which has many different adjustment options including cut-in distance, curve control, tension, and even backstop replacements are included to give it a customized feel. The DJM-S9 also has a Dual USB Soundcard for easy DJ changeovers or multiple users/computers. The DJM-S9 comes bundled with Serato Noisemap vinyl and the full Serato DJ software. On the downside, the DJM-S9 does not allow users to combine both Serato DJ FX and Pioneer Beat FX to use them simultaneously. You also cannot select multiple Serato DJ effects using the mixer alone. The DJM-S9 is also fairly expensive with a retail price of $1749. Other than these small issues, the DJM-S9 is simply a BEAST of a scratch DJ mixer and the added Serato DJ goodness in form of the Performance Pads sets this mixer apart from the rest...

Pros

  • Solid & Sturdy Build Quality/Construction (Metal Post Knobs!)
  • 16 RGB Backlit Pads Section for Serato DJ Control
  • Excellent Pioneer & Serato Effects Section with Punch-In Switches
  • Great Magvel Pro Crossfader with Adjustments
  • Dual USB Ports for Easy Changeovers or Multiple users
  • Comes Bundled with Full Serato DJ Software & Control Vinyl

Cons

  • Cannot Combine Multiple Serato DJ And/Or Pioneer DJ Effects
  • Expensive
