Royce da 5'9" and J. Cole Float Down Memory Lane on “Boblo Boat”

Royce and Cole team up for a languid and nostalgic collab.

Fresh off the release of PRhyme 2, Royce Da 5’9’’’s long-awaited collaborative project with legendary producer DJ Premier, the Detroit MC is back with the nostalgia-laced “Boblo Boat,” the first single for his upcoming solo album, Book of Ryan, alongside the album's only guest, J. Cole.

Over warm and jazzy production from 808-Ray and Cool & Dre, Royce reminisces about everything from family vacations to losing his virginity, to finding himself. He spits with the touching effect we’ve come to love from polished, grown-man rap.

There is a languid glaze to Royce’s delivery, wherein each syllable rolls off the tongue like an exhausting sun ray. Leaning into his R&B side, J. Cole amplifies the smooth quality of the single, as he thinks back to memories he was too young to cherish before picking up the pace and allowing his raspy cadence to pepper the single.

With only seven years between them, J. Cole and Royce effectively flip “Boblo Boat” into an inviting and retrospective coming-of-age tale.

"Book of Ryan is telling my story in a way I want people to understand it," Royce told DJBooth earlier this month. "Boblo Boat" is proof he wasn't lying.
