Los Angeles rap darling Blu and his frequent producer-collaborator Nottz have teamed up twice over the past five years to release two conceptual EPs: Gods in the Spirit and Titans in the Flesh. Re-mixed and mastered, with a fresh tracklist from Blu, the two EPs have finally been stitched together into a proper LP: Gods in the Spirit, Titans in the Flesh.
Beyond compiling the artists’ work, the album also features a grip of unreleased material, including the harrowing and heavenly “Yesterday.”
Blu raps with an impossible-to-dull precision and wit on “Yesterday,” trading verses with rapper-actor Sene which are driven more so by reflection than nostalgia—self-inventory raps at their finest. A distant and angelic choir lifts the song up into the stratosphere.
As “I’m tryna repaint what yesterday is” dissolves into Elisa Meri’s yearning high notes, we are left with the impression that the past does not always have to haunt us. In that same breath, Blu does not dwell within “Yesterday,” but instead uses the single as the launching-pad towards a brighter tomorrow.
Gods In The Spirit, Titans In The Flesh is due out April 13 and will be available on digital, vinyl, CD and cassette via Coalmine Records.
