- Artist: The Airplane Boys
- Track: Born to Be
- Producer: Illangelo
- Album: Where’ve You Been
Yielding rap heavyweight Drake as well as left-of-center buzzmaker The Weeknd, Toronto seems to be growing into a hotspot for hazy, reflective urban music that blurs the boundaries between rap, R&B and electronic pop. Booth newcomers Beck Motley and Bon Voyage, together known as The Airplane Boys, offer their take on this burgeoning style on Born to Be, the latest single off their new, free album. Over Illangelo's moody beat, sampled from the Arcade Fire's The Suburbs (Continued), the duo exhibit alternately impassioned and deadpan flows as they illuminate the motivations behind their hustle: “Tryin' to celebrate but there really ain't no time for that / Progress, we too busy moving mountains, we tryin' to get the fam outta public housing.” The Airplane Boys clearly have a “long road ahead” before they achieve their dreams but, with the determination and creativity on display here, it's only a matter of time before they take flight. Or have I got it twisted? If you're feeling their style, you can check out the official video here, as well as copping their latest mixtape, Where've You Been, at the crew's official site.
