The police have handguns, Kevlar vests, horses, batons, shotguns and pepper spray, but the people have something that can be even more powerful; video cameras. For his latest effort the always unapologetically revolutionary B. Dolan flips N.W.A.s classic anti-cop anthem F**k the Police into a motto for the digital age. Film the Police finds producer Buddy Peace remixing Dr. Dre’s classic beat into a head nod inducing beat, setting up Sage Francis to kick off the festivities with an opening monologue that also serves as a hip-hop roll call. From there headliner Dolan reminds listeners just how powerful even an iPhone camera can be - “We aimin lenses at the state’s weapon / till they remember whose streets they’re protecting” - sentiments that Rhymesayers standout Toki Wright and Jasiri X echo in verses that double as political calls to action. While Film the Police isn’t part of a larger album, it is part of a larger movement. Occupy all streets, occupy hip-hop or simply occupy your block. Whatever it is you stand for, just make sure you stand for something. And wherever you go, don’t forget that camera.
