Bruno Mars - Grenade (Grammy Version)

  • Artist: Bruno Mars
  • Track: Grenade (Grammy Version)
  • Producer: The Smeezingtons
  • Album: None

Originally featured back in October of 2010, single Grenade found Bruno Mars dealing with heartbreak on an epic scale – so racked with grief was he that he'd suffer any number of grisly (and messy) deaths to earn a certain fickle female's love. In consolation for all that pain, of course, Mars scored his third BillboardHot 100 chart-topper, so it's hard to feel too sorry for the guy. Anyway, those who tuned in for the Grammy ceremonies a few weeks back were treated to a very different version of the record, one which traded The Smeezingtons' ragged, emotionally fraught synth instrumental for something that sounds ripped straight from a vintage soul cut. Dressed up in soulful backing harmonies and warm organ/piano chords, the most violent love ballad in recent memory takes on a hyperbolic mood a laCee-Lo's F*ck You but, thanks to an impassioned performance from Mars, its emotional force is undiminished. Time for the big question: how does this rendition stack up against the original? Debate away – and, if you haven't already, pick up a copy of Doo-Wops & Hooligans, available now in stores and online.
