Some relationships are flimsy and structurally unsound, like a house built on sand. The love that Def Jam crooner Elijah Blake and his girl share is more like the Towers of Tokyo—rock-solid and really f**king huge. Though the somber black-and-white promo art had me expecting a noirish alt-R&B jam à laThe Weeknd, my first impression couldn't have been further from the truth. In reality, the cut is an openhearted ballad in the doo-wop tradition of the 1950s. Booth-featured artist/producer Jack Splash crafts a characteristically vibrant backdrop for the singer's expressions of romantic devotion, layering poignant strings over a crisp I-vi-IV-V piano progression. Towers is unattached to any forthcoming project, but those feeling it should stay tuned for further details on the artist's 2014-bound debut set, which currently lacks both a title and a solid drop date.
