Plenty of recording artists desire crossover success, but few are audacious enough to try what Ester Dean‘s undertaken on her latest promo cut: to take a beloved record of a very different era and genre and translate it into her own musical idiom. The Interscope recording artist’s version of I Can’t Make You Love Me could hardly be more different from country singer Bonnie Raitt’s 1991 rendition. Whereas the original was a sparse, slightly syrupy piano-driven ballad, Dean’s re-imagining is a full-bore dancefloor scorcher, with the singer belting the record’s heart-wrenching lyrics over an explosive, four-on-the-floor beat by DJ Mamia.
