F. Stokes' latest single was only recently pressed to (figurative) wax, but its inception dates back decades. According to the Chicago-by-way-of-Arkansas emcee, Lets Build was, “made in 1985 or ‘86 in a welfare office on the Southside of Chicago." The artist continues, "This piece is derived from the cold, empty, hopeless emotions I felt when I saw my mother filling out the paper work as me and my sister waited.” And its stylistic roots go even deeper; Kleber Fleury's minimal, hand drum-led production and the rapper's dynamic, sparsely-rhymed bars bring to mind classic spoken-word works by Gil Scott-Heron and The Last Poets. Set in the streets of Bed-Stuy, Maria Juranic's visuals pay tribute to the cinema of Spike Lee. Fans can find Let's Build, the reader-approved Carpe Diem and much more on Stokes' Fearless Beauty LP, out now online.
