There aren’t many of us who can claim that we’ve been forced into a situation where we’ve had to do Anything To Survive – my childhood was more like Anything to Make it to Soccer Practice on Time – but Freddie Gibbs is certainly one of them. Oh, and Freeway too. Gangster Gibbs’ latest release relies on a beat from Beatnick & K-Salaam that has a real hypnotic bounce, giving Freddie a sonic canvas to paint his lyrical tales about life on the edge of survival “I ain’t slept in two weeks it’s like I’m up like I’m tweekin / it’s hard to get paper up when you beefin,” sentiments that Free echoes in a well-timed guest verse delivered with the Philly Freezer’s trademark rasp (early!). Top it all off with a hook from Adrian and you’ve got the kind of soulful yet gangster record that’s become Gibbs’ bread and butter. Fans hungry for more from the Gary, Indiana representative should watch Survive’s visual counterpart right now, and keep an eye out for his Cold Day in Hell free album, set to drop on Halloween in collaboration with LRG.
