J. Cole - Return of Simba

  • Artist: J. Cole
  • Track: Return of Simba
  • Producer: Elite and J. Cole
  • Album: TBD

I could go really deep into how this song is sweating Big J, but I'm probably just jaded (shrug). However, with that said, new promo leak Return of Simba is a necessary move on J. Cole's major chessboard; it begins to answer the question of where the North Carolina native's place is in the hip-hop game. Cole lets loose on the record, switching through styles like an Olympic swimmer and showing why he deserves to be pushed as the number one artist on Roc Nation. Aggressive and deliberate, he strokes the people's want for lyricism with continuous punch lines and displays his ambidexterity on both the notepad and drumpad (with some help from producer Elite). Even over a triumphant beat, so much about Return says that J-Simba is still battling with who he is as an artist and what his CEO, Mufasa-Z, wants him to be. Guess we'll have to (continue to) wait and see if J. Cole can take the kingdom by storm. Return of Simba won't be placed on Cole's unscheduled debut album, Cole World, but if all goes according to plan, we will have an official Cole World single by the end of the week. Fingers crossed...
