K. Sparks - 1985

DJBooth_logo2x
  • Artist: K. Sparks
  • Track: 1985
  • Producer: Kurser
  • Album: None (Promo Single)

1985 was a banner year for the emerging genre of hip-hop, yielding such acclaimed LPs as Run-D.M.C.'s King of Rock, LL Cool J's The Radio and Mantronix's The Album. For K. Sparks, however, it was a time not of dope music but of trauma and familial strife. On this freshly-released promotional single, a headnodic Kurser production backs the Queens fave as he revisits a few painful memories from his childhood, spitting about his brother's diagnosis with bipolar disorder, the revelation that his mother had cancer, and his eventual turn to alcohol as a way of numbing the pain. Far from breaking his spirit, though, those experiences only left him more determined to build a better world for himself, his family and his community: “I live for better days just to help a better nation.” This inspiring joint isn't attached to a larger project, but those feeling it can, of course, keep it locked for the latest from the DJBooth regular.

Update: We have added the Daybreak Media-directed visuals for Sparks' 1985 single.
