On November 9, 1799, an African-Caribbean slave named Denmark Vesey purchased his freedom after winning $1550 in a city lottery. Once unchained, however, he didn't simply start a new life for himself; he began plotting an insurrection with the help of fellow free blacks. Though the schemes ended tragically, with Vesey and 34 of his conspirators hanged, his revolutionary commitment to liberty and equality has inspired many—among them M1, who makes his solo DJBooth debut with a record dedicated to the historical figure. On Genocide Highway, the dead prez member examines the “sea of pain,” struggle and bondage that still reigns supreme right outside his door, delivering his radical rhetoric over a lush instrumental by K-Salaam & Beatnick (complete with a dope vocoded hook). Queensbridge legend Nas provides politically-charged guest bars. This project isn't currently attached to any forthcoming solo release, but fans can keep it locked for all the latest from M-1, both solo and as one-half of dead prez.
