Mick Jenkins - Martyrs

DJBooth_logo2x
  • Artist: Mick Jenkins
  • Track: Martyrs
  • Producer: On Gaud
  • Album: The Waters

On Mick Jenkins's Booth debut, September 2013 mixtape single The Water, the Chi-town rhymesayer called his peers out for prizing fame and luxury goods above the necessities. Even for those who don't have to worry about clean H20, however, the heedless pursuit of glory and riches can end badly. Jenkins' latest feature finds him eulogizing the many black youths who have become Martyrs for the hustle. In caustic verses, he shakes his head at the generation of gun-toting men and sexually precocious women coming up in his hometown. Just in case you don't catch the emcee's meaning, producer On Gaud incorporates a sample from Billie Holiday's anti-racist classic, Strange Fruit, into the hook of his moody, guitar-laced beat. 5 Pound Media directs the joint's official visual accompaniment. The Waters still lacks a drop date but, as always, fans can keep it locked for further news and tunes.
