Omen ft. Diggy Simmons, Ashton Travis, & Mike Jaggerr - Get Back

DJBooth_logo2x

The title of Omen's forthcoming set, along with politically-charged lead single Negro Spiritual, seem to suggest a project packed from top to bottom with hard-hitting social commentary – but, hey, even Black Heroes have to grapple with love and loss. Thus, on Get Back, the Grammy-winning beatsmith enlists a lineup of young rhymesayers to delve deeply into the topic of heartbreak. Omen's melodically understated string beat, punctuated by brass stabs and vocal flourishes, sets the mood as Rev Run progeny Diggy Simmons, Houston's Ashton Travis and Brooklyn buzzmaker Mike Jaggerr (the latter of whom assisted Omen on the production tip) drop bars addressed to ex-girls who have their respective hearts on lock. Though I found Simmons' precocious opener especially affecting (“If there were no age limits I'd probably be somewhere sippin' / Orderin' more rounds, till the pain drowns...”) all three turn in performances that, whether or not they convince the ladies in question, should earn them love from Booth readers.
