  • Producer: Kenny Dope
  • Album: Future Before Nostalgia

There are those who prefer to cultivate a few comforting illusions—some will even admit they can't handle the harsh truth. Booth newcomer Rasheed Chappell, on the other hand, is a “red pill” kind of guy, determined to unplug from prevailing falsehoods even if it means spending the rest of his life battling robots in a creepy cavernous wasteland. (Of course, getting to kick it with Cornel West does sweeten the deal). On album standout Theology of War, Kenny Dope's leisurely, piano-led boardwork sets the stage for a veritable massacre of sacred cows. In fiery verses, the Jersey native recounts how popular beliefs simply provided pretext for cruelty and exploitation: “Man found gold, and man found greed, then man sold weaker man to serve man's needs / Man spread lies, man used chains / Man made hate, said it's all in God's name” And religion is only the beginning—by the end of the record, he's implicated science, the media and even public education in the creation and maintenance of injustice. Digging Rasheed Chappell's radical rhetoric and uncompromising vision? There's plenty more where this came from on Future Before Nostalgia, released July 12, and out now online.
