Since the emergence, disappearance, and resurgence of The Last Poets, no other group of young stanza-kickers have come about and made a significant impact in the music world. Thankfully the ReadNex Poetry Squad have decided to fill this void. Although they rely on hip-hop foundations a bit more than other poetry musicians, the group certainly brings a different angle to listeners, showcased in their new single, A Tree Grows in a Place Called Home. Composed by Charles Graham, tranquil piano keys highlight a smooth and relaxing instrumental while in true posse form, Poetry Squad members Decora, FreeFlowin, Jarabe Del Sol, Latin Translator hop on the track and interject themselves in musical harmony; with all their separate parts, from sharp rhymes to soft harmonies, working in unison. As they reminisce on their home in Brooklyn classic hip-hop samples (I hear you T.R.O.Y.) scratch their way into your ears, demonstrating the often seamless blend between hip-hop and poetry. For more genre-crossing dopeness like A Place Called Home, be sure to check out ReadNex Poetry Squad’s latest album, Day Before Sound, which dropped earlier this month.
