Considering that a knack for narrative is one of the hallmarks of a top-tier emcee, it should come as no surprise that The Push emcee Shane Eli's latest effort (a Booth-exclusive world premiere!) comes with an extraordinary backstory. As the freestyle series alum tells it, the genesis of the Who Am I occurred when he stopped for a drink during a lonely drive through Alabama. "In the back of this dusty bar, so drunk he could barely sit, was a man singing along to the jukebox in a voice so extraordinary no one else dared speak... He told me his name was Ezekiel Sugarwater, and that night I knew I had to make music with him.” Whether you take Eli's story as the gospel truth or not, there's no denying that the the cut lives up to its intriguing premise. As usual, the headliner handles things on both sides of the boards, cooking up a hard-rocking beat (sampled from The Who's Who Are You) to back his own braggadocious bars. While this innovative joint isn't attached to any forthcoming project, it should be just the thing to get fans' mouths watering in anticipation of DJBooth.net-sponsored sophomore set I Can Do Better, due out in Feb. 2011!
