At first, the debut feature from Skrizzly Adams might sound like it landed on The DJBooth frontpage by mistake. The 22-year-old artist/producer's weathered vocals, delivered over a melancholy set of arpeggiated guitar chords, sound like they belong to a country/light-rock cut, rather than anything in the urban-music arena. When West Virginia and Cigarettes hits its stride, however, its crossover potential becomes abundantly clear. As the Jersey/NYC dual repper delivers his emotionally-charged verses and chorus, the beat expands to include a powerful, hip hop-informed drum pattern, accompanied by springy synths. The resulting cut doesn't fit neatly into a genre box, but will undoubtedly earn high marks from lovers of envelope-pushing pop.
